Running and Some Walking

Good morning,

What a difference a week makes, the highs and lows of New England weather. Here in the south it has been a steady continuum of warm weather and not particularly running friendly. I ran Monday after classes and it was warm enough wear on me as I progressed through a 60 minutes run. I struggled a bit with the back 30 minutes and even walked a couple of times. Not typical for me but I have come to accept that there are days when I have to take what my body gives me. Even with the couple of walk breaks I had an overall pace of 9:23. Looking closer at my splits, I would deduce that with the warmer weather, some pretty tough hill that first mile and starting out faster than I should have, were all contributors to my struggles coming back. Simply put dumb running on my part. However, I enjoyed every moment of it!

Yesterday would normally be have been a quality workout day doing either intervals, hills or threshold but after pushing it Monday, I gave myself some rest. It is not often that I pay attention to my Garmin’s recovery advisor, but I felt like the advice to take 48 hours of recovery was valid. Today after classes I will do my strength training and tomorrow, I will try to squeeze in some intervals between volunteering with the Special Olympics and heading to Charlotte for a concert. I am enjoying my running more and more as I accept that every run cannot be my best and that is okay. Walking some instead of pushing through, can turn a bad run into an enjoyable run.

I am really excited about the NFLR Community Training Group that starts this Saturday. While I will be 900 miles away, I am always happy to hear about the new runners that discover our very special training groups. We offer experienced and caring coaching for every level of runner and we keep it fun. Come on downtown to Bagel Grounds at 8:30 Saturday and join something special!

Time to get on to my weekly men’s breakfast. Have a great day and finish the week strong!

God Bless!

Mike
