Poorly Training the Coach

Good Afternoon…

Yesterday I was able to chat with you from 12,000 feet up and this morning I am back on earth.

It is a beautiful day here in the Northeast and this afternoon I will take advantage of it and get a 65 minute run in. After a couple 4-hour flights over 4 days, I badly need to move my levers and muscles. If you did not get a chance to read my chat from yesterday on what is TRX, be sure to check it out (https://nofinishlinerunning.com/blog/learn-about-trx-from-1200-feet-up).

This week is my get back to it week. With an easy run today, I will kick off a week that will include 3 runs and 2, possibly 3 strength training workouts. Adding a marble into my bucket after each workout, I will hopefully see less of the bottom of my container.

This week I also plan to map out races I would like to run over the next 11 months. With different dynamics in my life, I am less motivated to participate in events, but I think it is good to get out and push myself in a race atmosphere. My goal is to run a 5-miler, 5K, 10K, half marathon and this years Reach the Beach relay.

The 5-miler is pretty much a no brainer, as it will be “Reds Shoe Barn race for a Better Community”. After “Reds” I want to push myself on the track a bit to work on improving my pace and see what kind of 5K time I can get. My goal is not to turn back the hands of time and be the runner I was a few years ago, but more to challenge myself to improve.

After the 5K, my plan is to get myself as functionally strong as possible for Reach the Beach 2019 and the White Mountain Milers half marathon. It has been a few years since I have entered either of those 2 events in good physical health. The challenges associated with my arthritic hip have played a significant role in my physical health, however I believe my lack of attention to improving my overall functional strength is the real culprit.

It is almost laughable how as a trained running coach slash personal trainer, I am adamant that our runners all get trained properly, but for myself I show very little discipline for how I train. I am almost jealous when I observe our clients and the success they experience through our guidance. How goofy is that!

I have no idea what my body’s limits are at this point. Thanks to years of poor stewardship (bad posture, poor running form, improper training and misguided strength training), I have some chronic issues, such as arthritis and most likely a torn labrum in my hip. These issues certainly have put some limits on what I am capable of, but until I put the work in to improve my functional stability and mobility, I will not know what my body is capable of?

It is funny, but I am actually envious when I watch our runners succeed after following our structured training, yet I do not follow that same structured training! Coach Davis’ needs to coach himself better.

Time to get myself ready to run! I hope you have a great Sunday and an even better week!

God Bless!

Mike
