NFLF's Core

Good morning

I hope you all are holding up okay under the various stresses of this challenging time. I hear many stories of various stresses and feel any encouragement falls short of bringing real comfort. Telling people to hang-in there, make the best of it, stay positive, and so on… are all sincere, but do little to affect all the turmoil and uncertainty hovering over the entire world. While many circumstances and anxieties are similar, the realities and fears are unique to everyone. So, while I may approach the current circumstances with faith and optimism. I accept others, are entitled to all the various emotions which are prevalent. Instead of enforcing my optimism as the solution, I am trying to be better at just listening.

Over ten years ago, I started this journey of coaching. Initially it began by being a recipient of guidance in completing a half marathon (thank you Diane Smith), and what followed helped to shape No Finish Line Fitness of today.

In my mid-30’s into my mid-40’s, I was an overweight ex-jock trying to find away to recapture my fitness and stem the tide of my increasing waistline. Thankfully Kathy was a great partner and we tackled both a better diet and exercise together. I remember being on vacation at Myrtle Beach and for some reason Kathy had brought the Fosters Daily newspaper (a Dover newspaper). As she perused the paper, she came across a Runners Alley advertisement for a beginner half marathon training group. She asked me if I thought we could do it? Neither one of us had ever run more than a 10K, so my first reaction was no way! Her desire was such, that I agreed it would be fun to try.

We not only completed the training and ran the Seacoast Half Marathon, we were now entrenched in the Seacoast running community. New friendships were forged, and our exercise dominated much of our activities.

A couple years later, I was asked by (then Runners Alley owner) Jeanine Sylvester if I would be interested in leading a training group for the Seacoast Half Marathon. Apparently, Jeanine believed I had the necessary qualities to help people train to run 13.1 miles. It was an exciting opportunity and would be the beginning of my journey to where I am today with NFLF.

I have chatted and written of the details of the journey from training group leader to running coach, to personal trainer, but that is not my intent today. The bit of history I just shared is the backdrop for what matters for us at No Finish Line Fitness.

In those early years it was so much fun to be part of a great community, and to be asked to help large numbers of people was an incredible honor. In the ensuing years, Kathy and I offered our help to various people, which led us seeking formal education and certifications. This journey has created what NFLF is today.

COVID-19 has not only rocked our country, but has our world spinning like I have never witnessed. While I will not force others to approach this pandemic as I do, I can continue to lead NFLF much like we helped those runners back in 2010. While $$ keep the lights on, our desire to help people from all walks of life continues as it did in those initial years. Thankfully today’s technology has allowed us to stay actively involved with our clients AND offer non-clients a helping hand. We are using MyZone to view and motivate our clients, Zoom has become a great tool for one on one training, our online training log is an amazing tool for our runners, and now we are using Facebook Live to offer free workouts.

While I will not try and convince anyone to “feel” differently, NFLF will offer support and encouragement however we can. Today, tomorrow and always!

Quite a bit of chat there! However, it is cool know what got us started, is what keeps us going today!

I hope your week is the best it can possibly be!

God Bless!

Mike
