More Than Just Running

Good morning

It was nice to be able to run in shorts and even a single layer of clothing. I could not run with the Winter Pacers running group, as I did a gait analysis. However, after I was finished with the gait analysis, I went out and ran along the bay.

While it was not sunny, the near 50-degree temperature was welcomed. I do not often listen to music, but to help with the Christmas spirit, I listened to my rather large collection of Christmas music. My running is still a challenge because of the long layoff, but for the most part I enjoyed the 62 minutes. Listening to my variety of Christmas music such as Stevie Nicks rendition of Silent Night and grateful for being able to run, both brought great joy. As much as I enjoy Christmas music, being able to run, I the greatest blessing.

Running is so much more for me than just a way to stay in shape and burn off some calories. For me, when I run alone, I am free to sort through all that is going on in my life. I typically use the time to take on my most challenging issues. Early in my run I think extreme and as I take each step, I work through all the options. Most definitely, longer runs offer more opportunity for better thought out outcomes.

When not in my running shoes, I am much less patient with the process of thinking out all the details of a matter and often this leads to a quicker and possibly not well thought out decision. I openly share my faith in God, so thankfully, I am much better these days with leaning on it to navigate my thoughts and decisions. However, combining it with the solitude of a peaceful run, gives me the opportunity for the best possible outcome.

I can be my worst enemy with how I tackle problems, issues and decisions. The distractions of everyday life are numerous if we allow them and I most definitely do. Running and my faith have allowed me an opportunity to minimize the distractions and see things from a clearer prospective.

Thankfully I am able to run! Yesterday I was grateful I did not have to put on running pants, which psychologically slow me down, no gloves, or even a second top layer. Yesterday, I enjoyed a peaceful (and comfortable) run with the sounds of this Christmas season. I did not solve anything significant, however I enjoyed the “reason for the season.”

Hope you are having a wonderful Christmas season. Only 9 days to go!

God Bless and have a great week!

Mike
