Embracing Responsibility
Sunday, April 26, 2020 · Mike Davis
Good morning!
April is winding down and while there is hope of a more social May, the uncertainty of the days ahead continues to challenge each of us on different levels. I try to balance my attention to a level which allows me to make sensible decisions, without getting caught up in information saturation war. I am most definitely not educated enough to advise anyone on what is the right approach. But I have approached this pandemic event with respect and lean on the side of caution. Whether I have the same level of fear or not does not matter, but respecting others does.
It certainly is sad to hear about the numbers of the older population being affected by Covid-19, however it has become apparent that this virus is not limited to our seniors. I was doing an online training session last week with a nurse and she told me of a 56-year-old man who just lost his life due to Covid-19. My first reaction was: “He is younger than me.” Her response was not a huge surprise, she said that the man was physically unfit and that in most cases of Covid-19 deaths, the individual is not very fit. If we circle back to the number of seniors who have died, it makes sense that lack of fitness plays a role. I am in no way trying to cast a blanket over all the circumstances of Covid-19, but more concerned that we do not take our fitness health responsibly. All of us can improve our fitness/health through exercise and better diet choices, yet we often prioritize that part of our life below various other activities or choices. I am certainly guilty of thinking in the moment and to heck with the long-term affect. Many of the older population are not in a position of turning back the clock and that is understandable. However, most of us have a choice.
A couple of weeks I received this email/text from a client who we coach long distance. This guy’s story is a great on and I could fill up a couple pages, but this text was very meaningful and hit on why I am in this business.
“The runs have been a real life saver during the isolation period.I've got Jeff trotting along with me most days - running every other day and that means being mindful of him and his comfort level.I am able to leave him after the 50+ minutes of intervals. And at that point I am able to complete your requested 16 minutes of nonstop running...or wherever that leads to over this next month.”
Jerry is a great guy who came to us last year and we spent the summer getting him stronger and teaching him to be a runner. He went back home at the end of the summer and has continued his journey. I am so proud of him and honored he put his trust in us. He actually lives in San Francisco where they went into lockdown long before the rest of the country. Knowing that we have helped him during this period is a really cool. Keep at it Jerry!
Stay positive out there!
God bless and have a great week!
Mike
