Good morning!
I am back after a couple of weeks off enjoying some down time with Kathy. In that time, I have been able to focus on healing my calf and am pleased to be back running. I was able to run my first complete run with Kathy on a trail and Monday night, I logged a 5-mile run with the NFLR gang that is training for the “White Mountain Milers Half Marathon/Relay” race. I owe my recovery to my son in-law Aaron Miller, who directed my recovery and I somewhat followed his instruction. I still need to avoid pushing up hills or exhilaration, for a while, but otherwise, I can start working on cardiovascular endurance. Great to be back on road (and trails)!
As I mentioned, Monday I ran with our NFLR training group that is in the second week of training. During the run, I was able to get to know a young lady that is new to NFLR groups and she was quite complimentary of our coaches and her experience so far. Her comments hit on all the key components that make me extremely proud of our team. Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and fun are all aspects of a No Finish Line Running training group training experience and getting feedback that we are successfully doing all of this, that is awesome! It is not too late to join the training group and train to run either a half marathon or split it up and do a relay. The group meets Monday and Wednesday nights at 6pm and Saturday mornings at 8am. The training includes: building up distance, some hill training, and some intervals on the track, all led by a group of certified running coaches. Next Monday night, we will have a bring a friend night and if you want to come checkout what you are missing, come join us. We will also be talking stretching on Monday as well.
Last Tuesday I had my first appointment with my VA assigned doctor and she reviewed the results from my physical and blood work from last March. As she listed off each result, she expressed her satisfaction with my health and at the conclusion, she said: “Keep doing whatever you are doing, you are in great health for your age!” I told her that I try to strength train regularly, but I do run consistently. She encouraged me to keep at both. I may never again run a sub-22 minute 5K or finish a half marathon amongst the top of my age group, but if I am able to help my health and enjoy it, I will be happy and feel blessed. It is not that I won’t strive to challenge myself, but I better understand that the journey is more important than the personal records. Nothing pleases me more than to have a runner that we have worked with, tell me that they are getting glowing comments from their doctor or that they have improved their body composition. It is all about the journey!
Time to get ready for my strength training! Have a great rest of your week!
God Bless!
Mike
