A Runner That Does Not Particularly Like Running?

Good morning!

Grab your coffee and pull up a chair.

Friday, I had a consultation with an amazing guy. His story was a joy to listen too, he lost 100 pounds, and at age 49, he has been running for one year and he does not particularly like running.

How awesome is it, to lose a large amount of weight and then take up running as you near 50 years of age! However, the part about not particularly liking running, seems to dampen the story, does it not? I will get to that in a moment, but I first want to chat about this gentleman’s decision to start running at a fairly later point in his life. As we talked, he related how he attempted to run and between the excessive weight and lack of cardiovascular health, he could not run but 30 seconds before being winded! Instead he decided walking was the better idea. Probably a good decision on his part, based on his current cardio health, body composition and his age. However, after improving both his cardiovascular system and improving his body composition through a good diet plan, he could start mixing in some running during his walks and this eventually led him to becoming a full-fledged runner. Despite some challenges, he proved that it is possible to take up running at a later age.

Now back to the part about no particularly liking to run. That certainly seems like a negative view of an activity, that he wanted to improve at. His description of his thoughts on running, are very much like those of many of us. “I do not particularly like the running itself, but I like what it does for me healthy wise and mentally.” I not only get that, but I agree with it. Running is not easy and it takes a great deal of discipline to put on those shoes and go run 6 miles. However, that discipline helps develop a mental strength and when we are done that run, we are grateful for who we now are. Running itself, is a hard activity and most of us if honest, would say that we do not necessarily enjoy the thought of it, but we do enjoy the physical and mental benefits. There are other benefits, that running provides, but this gentleman and I totally agree on not particularly like the running itself.

Great consultation and I look forward to helping this runner find greater direction and even joy in his running!

Have a great Sunday and God Bless!

Mike
