2018 Resolutions
Friday, January 05, 2018 · Mike Davis
Good morning!
A few years ago, we were introduced to “polar vortex” and now a “bomb cyclone”. Maybe it is me, but I’m pretty sure this is all new terminology! I suppose that science better understands the technical cause of each storm, and back in “the day,” we just went along with simple expletives to describe the enormity of a storm. I guess it is nice to know what we are experiencing, but the results are still the same. Much of the east coast is blanketed with snow and it is cold! A “bomb cyclone” indeed!
With 2018 now fully here, I realize that I did not chat about my goals or so-called resolutions for this year. Truthfully, I am not a resolution type guy, but I guess I am goal oriented, so maybe there is no difference. As I have aged, I have kind of developed a criterion for setting my goals and by doing this, I have found that I am more successful in the follow through. The criterion for me is as follows:
- -Will this improve my relationships
- -Will I have a better quality of life
- -Will this benefit others
- -Will it matter
- -Finish reading the entire bible
- -Develop greater patience
- -Be in the moment
- -Better mirror the Mediterranean Diet
- -Run double digit miles each week
- -Strengthen all my muscles
I know I sound a bit over-the-top, but for me to be successful with a goal, I must have a deep belief in the “why’s” of my goal. Simply wanting to lose “15” pounds will not work for or even if I do, it will most likely comeback. However, if I think about my diet and how it relates to my quality of life, I can then make better choices in what I eat.
With that painful introduction, here are my goals for 2018:
As a running coach, many of these goals are similar to what I try to instill in those that we help at NFLR. The criterion is certainly different for people, but if we help our runners focus on the wonderful value that attained from the right training, we will help them enjoy running for reasons beyond what there Garmin says. Goals will not only be met, but a far greater gain from their training will be realized.
Small steps will help me with my resolutions (goals) for 2018 and I hope that all of you are excited about what you can do in this new year as well!
Stay warm and safe my friends!
God Bless!
Mike
Mikes Tip:
If you do not feel motivated to workout, put your workout clothes on and wear them anyhow.
